Turner County is located in the southern part of South Dakota and was named after General J.E.B. Turner who led Union forces during the Civil War. The county has a population of just over 12,000 and consists of rolling hills and farmland.

The first inhabitants of Turner County were Native Americans who hunted and foraged in the area. In 1875, Colonel Samuel F. Duane founded Duane’s Post on land that is now within Turner County. The post served as a trading post and a stop on the Pony Express route between California and St. Louis.

In 1883, gold was discovered in Turner County and the town of Whitehall quickly developed as a mining town. By 1884, there were more than 1,000 people living in Whitehall; however, the boomtown atmosphere quickly faded and by 1911 only about 60 people remained in the town.

During World War I, Turner County played an important role in supplying troops fighting on both sides of the war. Camp Kane was built near Whitehall to house soldiers from Iowa while Camp Sheridan was built near Leadville to house soldiers from Colorado.

After World War II, Turner County experienced another boom when it became known as a farming center due to its fertile soil and ample sunshine hours. Today, agriculture remains a major industry in Turner County; however, there has been a recent increase in manufacturing businesses as well.
